This condition, also known as bruxism, can be a difficult problem resulting in pain, loss of tooth tissue and damage to or fracture of crowns and fillings. Diagnosis is made after a thorough history and examination of the muscle groups of your head and neck as well as a full dental examination. Treatment can include splint therapy to try and discourage the habitual teeth clenching and grinding. In addition, botulinum toxin can be used to target the muscle groups responsible, relaxing them and easing discomfort. This moderates the habitual tooth clenching and grinding and can have the added benefit of reducing muscle bulk and slimming the lower face.
